Interesting Test Results – Is your Website Working Well in Firefox?

Posted by: Socrates Socratous on: Nov 3rd, 2006

WOW!

I had to share this…
I was going through the server stats of some of my websites and
I found something Really Interesting. Firefox IS becoming much
more popular I anticipated and it is happening fast!

Take a look at this screenshot from Oct 2005: (this site is in the internet
marketing niche but I will not disclose the domain name for obvious reasons)

As you can see from the picture below, 12.7% of the visitors to this
site use Firefox Browser. (Not bad huh?) [pictures are clickable]

browser_usege_proof1_2005.gif

Now, moving on to Oct 2006 for the SAME website. Take a look at
the new numbers below. Firefox is up to 22.4% of the website’s traffic.
Quite a gain isnt it?
That means for every 1000 people that go to your site 224 people
use firefox. If your site converts at a moderate 2.5% for a $50 product
that is $280 generated from firefox users.

browser_usege_proof1.gif

I have been looking into many internet marketing websites (including
some Very Well Known marketers’ sites (below 10K alexa rank) that
break in firefox, to the point that the site is unusable.Using the same
example above, these sites lose $280 for every 1000 people that go
through that site. (And trust me, these sites generate many thousands
of visitors every single day)

Now lets look at some other examples (Non internet marketing related)
I ve setup simple site for testing in a niche that has nothing to do with
internet marketing and drove some PPC traffic to them for 2-3 days.

Here are the numbers from the 2nd site:

firefox 9.2%. not bad for non internet savvy people. they go with
their “windows browser” mosltly. But still, the number is signifigant
and can play a major role to your income. (say you make $10000 a
month, you can lose $920 every month if your site breaks in FX)

browser_usege_proof2.gif

This gets quite interesting here with this other site. I dont even
know if I can trust these results yet, but I am showing you here
anyways.

This site has 46.8% Firefox users???? (again, non internet marketing)

What I am trying to show here, is an increasing market gain for the
Firefox Browser after the push the get by Google
Question is…

Is YOUR website working correctly in Firefox? Make sure to check
it out ASAP.

What do you think about this experiment? Please comment below
(Also, If you know someone’s site that breaks in firefox, please

    Hi,
As a die hard Mac user, I can tell you a lot of us are changing as Firefox is faster, has tabs (very important !) and instantly does everything on set up.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see it gain far more popularity…

As for MyDD, cant wait until support gets me up & running ! I’ll use it also for pushing more people toward my site ect…
    Welcome Firefox users 🙂 🙂 🙂

I agree 100% with your article post. I think that you should also include the Netscape browser into your list. The 3 primary browsers surfurs normally use should be considered when creating web pages. I know that there are many other bropwsers out there as well, but designing your web pages to look somewhat the same in the 3 primary browsers is a safe bet for your site visitors. 🙂

What I do is code for Firefox, hack for IE, and then hopefully the rest will show my site fine. I also regularly check my site in Opera. If I had access to a Mac I would add Safari.

This has been an interesting season of new broswer releases with IE7 and Firefox 2.

  7. Fearless Leaderon 03 Nov 2006 at 6:00 pm

My site shows Oct 2006 10% Firefox

    And April 2006 30% Firefox

They look like they are going down to me

Hi I did not know that you needed to set your website up for other browsers. I have been using Homesite5 to create my web pages and the only thing I can find that is slightly off in Firefox over Microsoft Internet Explorer is in my photo gallery some of the titles are a little of center. Most are fine just the longer ones appear to have a problem.

I have absolutely no idea on how to fix this, as anything I do would affect Internet Explorer. If anyone knows what to do I would appreciate the imput.

I am not getting many visitors from Firefox anyway
    my figures for Oct are:
MS Internet Explorer: 60.59% and 2.3% from FireFox I get 35.6% from Unknown whatever that means.

My figures for November for Firefox are up a little to 3.2% as are my figures for Unknown 43.6% MS Internet Explorer 51.46%. Seems that Unknown is out ranking Firefox by miles and eating into MS Internet Explorer as well.

I enjoy getting other peoples points of view. By the way like the new blog

I am sure some of you are thinking boy she does not know much about the internet in regards to Unknown but that fine. I would be happy to learn something new in this area.

I like the new blog design by the way.
    Love and Light

    Hi Socrates,
I actually test my sites out with IE 6 & 7, Firefox and Opera. I have to use my Win2K box for IE6 but it gives me a great point of view and helps me see some of the quirks with CSS, and various ‘hidden’ settings in the different browsers.
I enjoy your tips. Keep them coming!

I’ve been using Firefox for quite some time now because of all the vulnerabilities in IE. And I like the tabbing.

Just installed the new IE7 yesterday but it loads so terrible slow! Am still getting used to it.

I check my site in both Firefox and IE and it looks pretty much the same in both. But if something did not work in Firefox, I would not know how to fix it. I visit many sites that look like a mess in Firefox and I usually write to them to tell them.

Anyone know of a coding site that shows how to code differently for Firefox?

    Hi,

    I enjoy your concern, thanks.

My website is Ok in IE and Firefox, but have a problem with Maxthron as Google Ads do not show up.

Any great advice would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks everyone for your posts.

They are helpful and appreciated. Keep them coming.

Ray, I agree with you that we should test our
sites with all browsers. I mean this is our business,
we should do whatever possible to make our stores
accessible to all. Failing to do so, it is like
failing to provide access for disable people to your
    “brick and mortar” business.

Having said that however, the main reason for this
blog post is because we had a tendency to ignore
other browsers since their market share was signifigantly small, almost non existant. Now with other browsers gaining ground, we should be getting more serous if we want to provide a great experience to all of our website visitors.

Fearless Leader, thanks for sharing your stats. That is indeed interesting. It seems to me that certain market segmets tend to use a particular browser more than others. It would be great if others can share some of their stats to get a better idea what the trends are like. The best way to look into this, is based on your own site. Virtually every hosting control panel will show you the web stats in an easy to read format. Each one of us should look into their own stats to figure out their own trend.

The main poing of this post was to increase awareness that other browsers are becoming increasingly important and we need to keep it in mind when designing our sites.

Sorry for the long post 🙂

    Hi Wariya,

    Thanks for posting.

If you are talking about the website
a-infopro.com I can see the google ads
    perfectly.

    Have you just added them?

    Hi Socrates
I have IE6 and firefox, my site http://www.advicefrom.co.uk shows up fine in both, is there anywhere I can test on other browsers without setting them up on my pc.
I have some in depth pictures on my site – I just found out that these can take ages to load on dial up an put people off, that bares thinking of too!
As for mydd I cannot understand people with problems, you set mine up quickly, when I hit a problem you sorted it personally within 12 hours and Mirza sent me some instruction which I now follow and it works every time. I dont know what I would do without it

    Thanks
    Mike

I’m a newbie and I’m dumb as a cucumber about this. Could you give me a quick breakdown of this and tell me why this is important.

Have been using FX for two years.
It is far better than I.E. Some of the extensions are fantastic.
I also use Mozilla (Good)and Netscape (Fair)
From experience I have found some sites (though not many) do not run well with FX though they are getting less frequent.

    Hi! Guys & Gals,

I totally agree that having the site work with the major browsers is most important. It is expensive to get traffic and to loose it because of flacky scripts or whatever is a bummer. I also agree that we will see more of FX as the new Apple computers with the dual system capability are bound to be hot items on everyone’s Christmas list.
Got to go…just looked at the clock and it’s all ready tomorrow.

    Later,
    Glen

P.S. Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving. Don’t forget to say a prayer for the troops…their the reason we are still able to have a Thanksgiving Day.

The only real problem I have with Firefox is watching some videos which will only run in IE. Bit of a pain until I discovered an item on the right-click menu which is “Open in IE” which it does perfectly. Trouble is it doesn’t go back to Firefox after the video ends so there I sit wondering why nothing’s happening until I read the title bar.

I’ve never used IE simply because it just hasn’t worked very well on any computer I’ve had since….well, since the WWW was invented. I used Netscape from v3 so had no reason to put up with what must be the worst piece of software ever produced by Microsoft and you’d have to have tried to use Word 5.5 to really appreciate that remark.

Hello, i read your blog occasionally and i own a similar one and i was just curious if you get a lot of spam responses? If so how do you reduce it, any plugin or anything you can advise? I get so much lately it’s driving me mad so any assistance is very much appreciated.
