Ebay Restricts Digital Products…

My thoughts:
Ebay will do what they think benefits the majority
of their users. In this case they decided to crack
down on the “sneaky” sellers that abuse the feedback
system and YOU as the honest seller, are also affected.
Personally, I see this as a GREAT opportunity for
people that understand marketing to thrive.
It actually reminds me of 5-6 years ago when digital
products were actually selling for real money.
This policy will weed out the people that bring
YOUR prices down to almost nothing.
This is NOT the time to give up.
To the contrary, this is the time to see
the opportunity and take advantage of it.
I have been teaching my students for some
time now, to use ebay as a LEAD GENERATION
system and not necessarily to make profits
from the actual items sold through the auction.
The REAL money is the money you can make from
promoting more expensive and related items to
those leads.
You start by instantly upselling an item immediatly
after the ebay sale, and continue to promote to
that customer all the way down your marketing funnel.
Whoever has been using this approach, will not
be affected by this policy, but benefited.
Ebay saw the lead generation potential of digital
products and acted accordingly asking you to list
them in their Lead Generation format; the Classified Ad.
====You CAN STILL AUTOMATE YOUR BUSINESS! ====
And to those that think MyDD is no longer good,
THINK AGAIN!
MyDD is more necessary NOW than ever.
In fact, now you will be forced to see the REAL
potential of the MyDD system.
Stay with me here and read below.
Digital Sales through classified ads CAN BE AUTOMATED
the same way and never have to manually send out
an email with the download links.
Listing a classified ad may in fact turn out to be
cheaper for you since it runs for 30 days and you
can include links and optin forms on them.
(quick tip: on the thank-you url of your optin form,
you can include the Buy Now LINK created by MyDD,
and as soon as someone opts in, they can be redirected
to payment. you can say something like:
enter your name and email to receive ordering instructions.)
You should still use MyDD to send the product
instantly as an additional free service,
while person is waiting for the CD.
Think about it.
Even though ebay restricts downloadable items now, ebay BUYERS
(that means: YOUR customerS) still expect the
IMMEDIATE download. So, you NEED to offer it to
them IN ADDITION to sending the CD.
You will still have the same advantage over the sellers that just ship.
There is Nothing to prohibit you from mentioning
in your ad that they will be receiving the digital
download as an ADDITIONAL BONUS. DO IT
There wont be any other way for people to instantly
download a product they purchased with Buy NOW,
unless you offer it as a BONUS to your CD.
You can also automate the sending of your CDs.
A few of our MyDD customers use the BCC feature
of the software, to instantly send an email to
a person/company that burns the product on the CD
and sends it out for them.
Remember, the S&H is paid by the customer.
The price of the actual product can remain the same.
ebay prohibits Digitally Delivered PRODUCTS.
However, certain items cannot be sent in any
other way, nor be put on CDs.
For example, selling access to your private site
(which COULD contain the same info as the book)
can offer the same benefits as an ebook
AND CAN be automated. MyDD can be setup to send
a unique username/password for
every customer that purchases an item.
Items in this category.
– Access to your private forum
– Access to your membership site
– Webhosting
– Account on your WEB-BASED software
– Timely delivered newsletter *
None of the above can be put on a CD and
there is NOTHING to download.

between your customer AND your email list.
By using MyDD, your customer is INSTANTLY and

I haven’t really done much in the way of digital items on ebay myself this year, I have dabbled a few times last year with success, so its a shame to see it go, I have mainly concentrated on selling physical items.
Is it a shock ?…….. Not really, it was always on the cards, not because there is anything wrong with Digital items on Ebay, but simply due to the amount of problems some sellers have created for the rest of Ebay sellers, and Ebay themselves.
What I mean, is some sellers cannot see the wood for the trees and simply go all out to make a sale at any cost by undercutting/discounting other peoples products, to such a degree that they ultimately become worthless, and there are some really great products that have gone down in value due to this.
I know there is a lot of value in selling a digital product on Ebay, cheaply, for the backend sales you can create etc.
I personally think this move will only improve the realtionship with Ebay and the sellers, which will then give the paying customer greater value for their money………. And as John Thornhill stated, this is not something to be upset or angry about, as selling physical items will definately bring you in more profits than you will first realise . . . . . If anything, as a physical item seller myself, I’m going to be a little disapointed that I now will have more competition……

I look as an oportunity too. When I was reading eBay late last night and saw that you could use classified ads, I had to tell you right away! Thank you so much for the 18 products that you have on sale for less then a bagel and coffee. ( although that is what I ate this morning! ) , I still bought that. And I was looking and studying how to make a member website, and though I build websites. I just didn’t get a hold of the whole CHMod. There are somethings I just have not learned yet. And I am glad you are there to help me.

I have to say that this is actually a blessing.
I know that this is being viewed as the upcoming “Ebay Ebook Depression” by some, but seriously, the most effective marketing and money making from the sales of ebooks and any didgital goods on ebay really were the upsells and OTOs after the sale.
This actually won’t hurt THAT much.
In Fact, as John Thornhill and others have pointed out, this actually INCREASES the likelihood of more back-end, after the sale, sales because to sell them in BIN or Auction you have to put them on CD-Rom, which means you can advertise your website or company on the label, the packaging, and inserts, as well as PLENTY of extra space on the disk for adding addition offers and multiple sales.
And really, the more successful ebook sellers have a website that only used ebay as a promotional tool rather than a sales tool anyway.
It IS buzz-worthy to discuss, but we REALLY should be helping the sellers that were EXCLUSIVELY selling through ebay, and get them on track with promoting from a website and concentrating on the basics of online marketing, this “Depression” could actually be a shot in the arm for alot of people that were using ebay as a crutch, and force them to grow and prosper like they dreamed, rather than the end of the world that some feel it is.

I think with MyDD we can work it out. Probably the best scenario to benefit from eBay base traffic and sell digital products is:
1) List a classify add in which include an opt-in form or send to a squeeze page which has an opt-in form.
2) The thank you page must contain buy it now
3) And from that point MyDD will do the rest.

I’m not sure how you would read this, but in the policy in the link in your post it reads
‘To preserve the integrity of the Feedback system, effective March 31 all goods that can be digitally downloaded or transferred electronically must be listed using the Classified Ads format.’
Note, it says ‘goods that CAN be digitally downloaded’. Although you might mail it out on a CD now instead, it CAN be downloaded. Wouldn’t this then still be against eBay policy because it CAN be digitally downloaded.

I’ve been using the Classified format for months already. I give away a free item (which you can’t do with the auction format), capture the customers’ email addresses, and redirect them on the Thank You / Download information page to my other (paid) products and websites. This method outperforms my Google AdWords campaigns by at least 5 to 1, in dollar terms.

what I keep finding odd about all of this ‘oh, people are undercutting me, the sky is falling’ tirade that a lot of people in internet marketing keep going on about, is that this is nothing new and it is nothing inherently evil.
This has been going on way before eBay and way before the internet even. It’s called ‘Doing Business’. Yes, undercutting someone else’s price and being undercut is a part of business, and the brick and mortar businesses, don’t constantly aqualk about this. (well, maybe to themselves. ;D)
It is not a bad thing either. It keeps the competition on their toes, it keeps things attainable to a businesse’s target market, and it generally spurs the economy onward.
Those who think that they shouldn’t have to deal with the competition probably don’t need to be in business to begin with. If you are in business, either offline or online, then you also need to accept those things that go along with doing business, the good and the bad. Otherwise, you need to find another line of work.

Hi, thanks for bringing this to my attention as a newbie, I am in a state of shock, I was in the stage of trying to learn how to carry out the steps between the eBay store and sending the books by MyDD. I must admit that I am still foggy and have not yet found a clear enough spelt out, way to achieve this, (not to ignore the fact that I still have not found out how to install MyDD Light package yet). This raises another question, what happens to those of us with eBay store set up exclusively for eBooks?
I admit to being shocked at eBays decision, it may well be best in the long run for people who know how to adapt their business to make use of this new methode, but as a newbie who has spent far to much money on buying training and a large stock of eBooks, it is bloody disasterous!
I say if E-Bay doesnot want our business we should take our business else where. there are hunderds of other auctions online. see how long ebay lasts if everyone takes its business else where.

I was just thinking about how this new eBay policy would affect those sellers who rely mainly on eBay to sell their digital products, because they have all their eggs in one basket. More importantly, I was kind of worried how this new policy would affect MyDD, and my sales because i have MyDD..
Socrates, thanks much for your message. You put my mind at ease. We all need to reframe this situation with eBay and find new opportunities out of this. I use eBay Classifieds, which are a good deal for 30 days. I am thinking of new ways to sell my digital products through Classifieds. The previous post above mentions the use of optin pages, and this is correct. One can have buyers submit their names and email address and they are then taken to a website that sells you ebooks, software, etc….with the help of Mydd..

I was just starting to study Ebay as a lead generation system. I wasn’t too thrilled about $.99 books et al. But guys like John Thornhill all sya you MUST have your own products. Luckily I am just finishing a couple up. They can easily be adapted to a physical product.
I’ll just wait for the first big marketer to create the course on how to find product fulfillment, and convert digital to physical. First one to market that product to ebay digital product people will make a couple $100,000.

The only thing I would like to make a point on is that after speaking with eBay today, I was informed that we may not offer to deliver our item via any form of digital download even though we are mailing the CD. To do so will be in direct violation of eBay policy. I am hoping you find this to be false, as I have heard of some of the reps giving out wrong information today because this appears to have been as much a surprise to them as to sellers.

Thank you Socrates. I’ve spent the day going between depressed and being angry (I still think giving one week’s notice is an incredibly bad business form).
After doing way too much research, I decided on using eBay as a lead generation tool, through building an ebook business. It’s finally starting to get some sales and some
sign-ups – and now this. For the newbie, with a tiny list, this kind of feels like hitting a wall. But now I’m being forced to pay attention to the viral/ongoing business stuff.
I’m mad at eBay, but I think Ragnar’s point about using the ads for sign-ups is certainly worth a couple of month’s trial. I’ll be saving money over my store and listing fees – and anything’s better than fooling around with adwords!

posted an auction. Glad we had that conversation
now. Perhaps it would even make a good product.

One of the solutions to this change in eBay policy that people have been talking about on several blogs and forums is to transfer digital content to CDs and then sell these as physical items. This doesn’t breach the new eBay policy and could actually offer additional possibilities for other upsells and offers either on the CD or packaged with it.
The downsides of this are the potential for a lot of additional cost and time involved in producing the CDs but I have found a great resource that will do all of the hard work for you at a very reasonable price.

Hi,thanks for newsletter.I’m still selling digital products on Ebay but,in my opinion,the things are working bad.What I want to say is that before(1 year ago) I sold more than 100 items/monthly with a good price,now I’m selling no more than 10-15 items with $0.01-$0.10 for a product that worth $24 on Clickbank.Why?Because are 1000 sellers on Ebay with the same product so,who want to buy a software with $10 if can buy it with $0.10 ?
I list on both ebay.com and ebay.co.uk, after hearing the news yesterday I read peoples thoughts and feelings on the matter and decided i’d wait for the dust to settle and then see what can be done. After spending 2 years learning new skills and applying them I’m not going to give up now. In some of the forums yesterday I read some horror stories. One seller had over 900 listings removed by ebay because he’d mistakenly left a web address in ONE advert, he also had his account suspended. After reading that I removed all my listings from ebay.com that finish after the dead line (31st March) so as to protect myself from being in violation and being suspended. People that tried listing on ebay.com yesterday were informed of the new ruling and were not allowed to list their items. Last night I tried a couple of listings on ebay.co.uk and ALL of my listings were accepted. I’m now going to change all my adverts from .com to .co.uk and list them a couple at a time, as ebay UK doesn’t have the digital ruling YET.
As you would expect, there has been a massive reaction from eBay sellers to this announcement. From despair to joy and every other emotion in between, people seem genuinely shocked by this move from eBay.
I’ve been following many of the blog and forum posts and there seem to be 4 main options emerging from the majority of the posts.

I for one am glad to see eBay taking this action. It will get rid of most of the scum running down eBay and allow honest sellers to thrive. You just got to “think out of the box”.
Long live classified ads! If used correctly, they can be more cost-effective than regular listings. Of course, you need a good feedback record to benefit from them. Buyers are less likely to trust sellers using a classifed ad listing if they have a feedback rating of zero, for example. But if you have a feedback rating of several hundred or more, that’s a different story. So, get busy improving your feedback rating before 31 March — but NOT by selling 1 cent ebooks!

Ok there. is a way that I use where you can sell any ebook you like
in any Ebay market you like. I have pritty much kept this techneque to my self, There are probably some of you out there using it but it seems that theres not many of you. I am about to write a new ebook all about it.
The gerneral idea goes like this (by the way this has worked for me for 6 months now)
First of all you choose a market Lets say dog training.
Then think of a dropshipping item to do with dogs, say a dog basket.
Then list the dog basket in the dog basket section on ebay.
Then on the same listing under the sales pitch of the basket put somthing like †Would you like some information on how to train your dog if so click here†You can get a little more creative than this but you get my point.
You then send them ( via the link) to your about me page where basicly you can do what ever you like.
I tend to promote one product at a time. for example I was promoting a learn guitar product (Jamorama) I found a good dropshipper who would dropship guitar strings worldwide, I listed them in the relevent section. after the guitar string sales pitch i simple wrote would you like to find out cool tips on how to improove…. click here to find out more.
And hey presto they have found my sales page to jamorama.
I sold lots of copies of ebooks and hey i even sold some guitar strings which payed for my ebay fees
Once you get the user to you about me page, its up to you what you do with them. Get creative people

i want to know more about ebay product, iam a nigerian and also live in
nigeria if i buy the product how can you send it to me. and also are you considering the cost of product (are you responding to small deal or you are considering only big deal eg i want to buy ipod, how can the transaction will take place.
The main things I’d like to highlight:
1. If you have been selling low cost ebooks without building a list in the process… this change could be the best thing that ever happened to you! Start building a list so you can OWN your business and be immune to changes such as this one.
2. Don’t complain about things you can’t change. Instead keep looking for the opportunities. While most of your competitors are bitching, you can be cleaning house by acting quick and adapting to the changes.
3. Take action now by testing eBay classifieds and/or selling your ebooks on CD.
Why do people see this as a good thing????, E-bay have shafted the small sellers so many times in the past two years ie “WE ARE LOWERING THE LISTING FEES” for certain items but if you read the small print the FVF goes up and basically you save nothing, the forums go balistic so they over a cheap listing weekend and everybodys happy again.
They did the same again with all the feedback crap acouple off weeks ago, again the e-bay forums go mad – but they then offer a fornights free gallery picture (which .com get all the time) and everybodys happy again.
So here we are getting screwed again, but you can use the classified ads to list your digital sales guess what E-bay make more money again at the cost of the sellers.
Watch this the next thing will be to use the classified ads you will need to offer Paypal as the only payment solution like what they did with PC software.
Sorry but I dont see anything good about this new policy.
I beleive theres more to this story than whats being told.
I think the digital products are here for the long haul, this is going to hurt many people, but like always they will survive.
Hi, your first statement is the opposite of what eBay is really doing. They will do anything to increase their profits. To wit: $9.95 for placing one advertisement
Actually this might turn out to be good for the digital market, we could end up making more money for our products then what we get on ebay. I’m sure that someone will come out with an ebook on the subject in just a few weeks and everyone’s questions will be answered. I use MYDD to deliver my ebooks, will be looking for step by step methods to set everything up again.

Even though I haven’t checked everything out about this situation; what I am reading seems likely. eBay is a business,and as such,has to look at various situations and make business decisions based on what is best for them.
Evidently, eBay felt there were digital marketers trying to take advantage of them. Probably they had complaints about selling something low cost and collecting email addresses and that might result in problems for them.
It seems that several people posting here thinks it may be for the best. I have found that getting negative about new situations seldom help resolve problems. Keep a positive attitude and work through the new rules; change is inevitable if you remain viable.

I really don’t understand the eBay classified Ads. Anyone care to give a simple step by step setup and how this thing runs? Cost? And how many items you can list?
Personally I think this sucks. I recently bought an eBay store and I planned to sell some digital products and see how it went. With an upsell and well the works. But it wasn’t to scam or get a feedback rating. Cause I already got over 90 in the feedback area.
I was just tired of mailing out items and wanted to try out this whole digital thing. Where a person can buy, and I really had no reason to be on the computer more then once a day to check how things went.
Guess for people, and I’ve marked a few sellers to study what they were doing. Will all but go out of business for some people.
It seems eBay is really ramping up things to drive people away. I noticed the sneaky thing they did by cutting costs on some services, yet they raised costs in other areas. So in the end you really didn’t save much, if anything.
Can anyone thing of other good Auction Sites out there?
I’m thinking switch over to them and sell ebooks and digital products. Plus you can charage more for them, if the market there is not used to it.
Overall though, I think this’ll just require new strategies. But eBay is not going to win favor by doing things like this.
Competition would be a good thing and force fee prices down, if some other auction site could really compete.

I think ebay was way too strict anyway so this is no big surprise to me at all. If you use myDD to its full potential then you could still get the same results off the web using keywords and google adwords. My mentors are Socrates and Dave Guindon, i have learnt a bomb load from these guys and it will take me months of constant planning to just use a fraction of it, once it gets rolling though there will be no way to stop it.

We don’t see this as a good thing, and we don’t like the constant eBay changes either.
We are merely saying, there’s nothing we can do about it, and complaining won’t fix the problem.
Instead we are offering possible solutions to turn this negative situation into a positive one.
…And depending on the action you take, you can turn this in your favor big time, while most are complaining.

Socrates, is it really necessary to send a CD? If we use the Classified Ad format on eBay, why can’t we just send the digital item? Also, you mentioned that a Classified Ad can contain links and an opt-in form. Where is this rule specified on eBay? I found very little information about Classified Ads on eBay.

A bold Statement I know, but true…………… Well as far as Ebay are concerned.

Now it’s a shame that eBay has come to this decision, but like many people have already stated. Look for the positives and not dwell too much on the negatives, as this will surely drag you down into a deep feeling of despair and confusion.
Move on, and look for other more lucrative ways that you can make money online. There are a number of discussions on hundreds if not thousands of blogs and websites looking for ways around this current situation. Some I feel will look towards trying to manipulate and deceive eBay and continue to try and sell their e-book and digital products on their site.
Over the last few days, I have listened to audio discussions as well as reading debates on this subject, by very successful e-book marketers and the one thing that is common amongst all of them is they are running scared. Very very scared of the possibilities of losing their current income and the success they have built up over the years.
Now many of these successful e-book marketers have come to a number of conclusions, and one avenue is to convert their current business activities of digital e-books/software into a physical item, and as a successful producer of physical multimedia information products (I had to laugh when I heard an audio discussion describing Multimedia Information Products as something NEW !, or atleast the term Multimedia Information Products )
But recently realised, that a more indepth discussion or help package would be better.

So get with it and remember you are building a real business: marketing never entails utilising only one source of revenue or lead generation.
Create a sales website for your ebook, advertise on Adwords or ezine ads, and SEO, and you can sell online!
