Making Money Using Adwords - with Test results

Posted by: Socrates Socratous on: Mar 19th, 2007

Is it actually possible to actually make money with PPC?

Maybe you are one of the people that got burned
with PPC and Adwords and you “gambled away” your
mortgage money “betting” on keywords

Maybe you are one of the people that did not get
burned, neither made any money. Just plain ol’
wasting precious time

You are not alone. The internet is full of horror
stories about people FAILING with Adwords.

There is also a smaller percentage of people showing
PROOF where they make thousands of dollars every
week with it.

Question is, Who do you want to be?

In real world more than 90% of the people live
paycheck to paycheck, struggling to get along.

But you chose not to be one of those. You want to
be the small percentage that makes the difference.

That is why you are reading my message right now…

So I will assume that you want to be part of the
smaller percentage that makes the money without excuses.

In December 2006, I decided to do a TEST.

I decided to enter a market I never had experience with
I decided I was not going to use my real name
and I decided I was going to make 10K a month in 3
months in this market alone.

My Plan was to do it with Google Adwords alone.

Beginning december I started working on my plan.

I did my research
I found an affiliate product
I created my adwords campaigns
and begun getting traffic…
Fast forward 3 months later…
(DEC 06, JAN 07, FEB 07)

Here are my results:
(Clicking on the images will open full graph in new window)

2006. Starting on the 47th week of 06 (Beginning December)
2006 Sales Graph Partial
The numbers accross the bottom indicate the number of the week in the year
the numbers in the boxes indicate sales value for that week.
As you can see above, by the last week of Dec, I made $2031 in a single
week.  (The very last week was a 1 day week in December and that is why it
only shows $170)

Beginning 2007. The graph shows up to March 3rd
2007 Sales Graph Partial
As you can see from this graph, by the last week of the testing
period I manage to make more than my goal of $10,000 in a single month.
$11,813 to be exact.

Considering my Adwords cost was only 35% of that,  65% of
that amount is pure profit.

In addition to that, I had a few other income streams tied into
the test which made an extra $2000 that doesnt show in my
Clickbank stats above.

(The graphs are created with CBAccountant. An excellent tool
that will download and analyze the data from ALL my
clickbank accounts automatically. It literally saved me
hours every day.)

Considering that
I had NO experience in that market
I had no JV partners
I was a total unknown
I started from zero

My success and system are replicable.

I dont care if you never used PPC before
I dont care if you got burned and lost your mortgage money

You are probably wondering why I used the word “betting”
instead of “bidding” on keywords at the beginning of this letter.

Because if you bid on keywords, you will make money
if you bet on keywords, you are most likely to lose

What do you want to do?

Bid or Bet?? You decide…

Biding requires some research, work and measures.
Betting doesnt require anything. Just head on to google’s
website and bet away money.
Coming up on wendnesday:
“The 3 most basic elements to making money”
-Without one of these 3 elements, you will not make a penny”

Please post your Comments below.

I just read a piece from Michael Fortin on “persistence.” Congratulations on yours!

I will be VERY interested in hearing more about the methodology you used. My own results have been as mixed as yours apparently once were.

It’s always good hearing from you. Thanks for
    the freshness your insights offer.

    Socrates,

Here I am thinking PPC profits are dead or dying and no one is making 5 figures a month anymore with those techniques.

I think a lot of people could live on $92,000 a year (did some math and used your figure as an average month - expenses).

I am so glad I read your newsletter and get great information from you on a regular basis.

Thanks for the tip about CBAccountant.

Hi There Socrates, I have been receiving your messages for quite some time now ever since I heard about MyDD which I understand is an excellent program which no-one has yet matched! Unfortunately I have been somewhat unsuccessful in the internet business.. I amke a few pounds on ebay but that takes up a lot of my time, I have purchased some turnkey adsense sites from George Pluss in his “Dime Sales” but he conned me with his last one! I locked my price at ten cents but when I tried to pay via paypal He was asking for £14.70 what a con! You have always been a straight dealing, honnest sort of guy so as long as your prices are reasonable then I know I can trust you not to rip me off.. I do not understand PHP, HTML, or MySQL.. which is way above my head… I know you don’t make promises you don’t intend to keep so let’s see what you have to offer this time… John :O)

Very interesting, Socrates. Nine days ago I posted an ad - good product, suitable bonuses, about 120 carefully researched keywords, bid up to the max to leave a profit. So far a total of 4 clicks!

Looking forward eagerly for info on how to do it better. Best wishes. Ron

    Hey Socrates,

What a great month. I haven’t had a month of earning like that since……. Oh…Yeah…. that was a dream I had last month.

I purchased APX a while back and have made some on it but I just don’t have the funds to lay out for the google fees. You see for me it would be gambling to put too much into campaigns without the money to pay for PPC.

I have my websites but the battle goes on to get relevant links so I can clime the search ranks. I have had to go to other programs that pays squat since I lost my adsence “I think Click-Fraud got me”.

I am looking forward to your future posts on how you did it though.

    Thanks

    Socrates,

You accomplished what I want to accomplish.

I have held back starting a PPC campaign for a multiple of reasons including 1) fear 2) not knowing what esactly to do or which tracking tools or methods to use to make sure the campaign is profitable 3) more fear.

Thanks for letting us in on your success. It is a positive reinforcement that my fear is just holding me back.

Care to share more on your system to success?

    Hi Socrates,

This is from the school of hard knocks. What you have termed a “bet” is what I foolishly have done over and over, and oh, the pain of lost money, confidence and “the dream.”

I truly hope that this does not become yet another empty promise rainbow chasing affair.

You are honest and caring, and we all can learn from your leadership. Thanks for putting confidence and a system before us.

    Hi Socrates

I bought MYDD from you and when I had problems installing it you offered to do it for me for free and I must admit there are other products similar to it, but they don’t compare. Youv’e been honest and upfront and I even bought the salesletter factory. No PPC is my next step for my new site and i took a year out to learn internet marketing and I must admit PPC is the one that if you get wrong kills you so I’m looking to you to give good direction because most of the so called gur’s only give enough to wet your appetite and i think if you can provide a good grounding your going to be in good position with your own following that gives it as you see it.

Lets hope you’ve produced an idiots guide that takes the newbie from basics to expert without the frills.

    Keep it up

    Hi Socrates,

I too am a Newbie trying to make some sense of all this.

I am in the process of collecting resale rights ebooks with a view to marketing on eBay. Yes, I know … along with every other man and his dog ;-) … but you’ve gotta start somewhere right ?

Next job will be to put together a website … hmmm … there’s a challenge !

Have tried PPC a year ago with some affiliate programs and like most people here also did my dough (husband not impressed! thinks I’m wasting my time) … very disillusioned about the whole Adwords thing.

Would welcome any advice you could give.

Looking forward to the ebook … with resell rights ?? ;-))

Need to make some bucks soon or he’ll make me get a “real” job ;-))

I have been receiving your emails for quite a while now. So far, this is the BEST as it gives me hope that I, too, can actually make money on the internet using PPC.

One thing I would be interested in finding out more about and that is the “research” you did and how you went about it.

It seems that is the qualifier between “bidding” and “betting”. I prefer “bidding”. Can you help?

Thanks for the great stuff you keep sending our way.

  30. Socrates Socratouson 19 Mar 2007 at 5:22 pm

    Hello Everyone,

Thanks for posting your thoughts here.

Pay Per Click is Definitely NOT DEAD.

    I know that first hand.

If it was dead, then nobody would be using it
    right?

The fact that there is competition is actually
a good sign to enter a market for a few reasons:

#1. You know before starting out that
if there are people paying for ads, there is
    money in the niche

#2. Those people have done most of the research
    and testing for you

    … and more (to come)

Having said that, there are a few markets I wouldnt
try to compete in. There are ways to find out what
    these markets are.

:hint: Stay away from bidding on the “make money” keywords.

I will explain why at a later post.

There are ways to make a load of money with the
“make money” market using pay per click, however
this is a more advanced technique I tested on
both PPC and ebay and works wonders.

:Hint: It’s not what you are thinking :)

    More about these later.

    Thanks for posting.

Remember, comment on all articles I post from
today until sunday (included) to increase your
chances of getting the “mystery gift” I promised.

multiple comments on the same post will count as 1.

    Thanks again

  32. Corinne Larimoreon 19 Mar 2007 at 5:35 pm

I DO belong to a company called the 1 Step System; paid $597.00 to joi, but you have to learn how to market REALLY WELL and advertising is my downfall. I don’t know the first thing about advertising, and the more I try to learn, the more mixed up I get. There are just too many ways to advertise, and I don’t know which ones to use. Plus I’m not swimming in money - - - far from it. I have never done PPC advertising as it costs money, and I know I would be a big flop if I tried. I would like to promote the company I belong to, but for the time being, I am going to have to try and learn how to make some money on eBay as it will take far too long to learn good enough to make money with 1SS. Is there a simple, step-by-step way of advertising for basically a newbie? I know quite a bit about the Internet, but I don’t know enough to make money with it yet; therein lies my problem. I look forward to your emails. Corinne

  33. Brian Gothardon 19 Mar 2007 at 6:12 pm

Thanks, Socrates. You probably don’t remember, but you saved my a** a few weeks ago. I was promoting chris’ product the day after release, and freaking out because I was sending very targetted traffic and not getting sales. I posted a plea on warrior, and got slightly flamed for impatience and unreasonable expectations. You didn’t harass me, you actually visited the site and told me HOW my link was broken. I immediately fixed it.
I’d love to say I made 100 sales after that, but the truth is I ran out of budget before I made a single sale. I really believe I probably made some sales in those first 90+ hits I sent to his sales page, but if the link is not formatted properly, it does not register.
I’m writing this to thank you, but also because it appears you have a strong newbie following.
EVERYONE: Take your time, make sure you understand affiliate links and how they work. TEST your links. Click them, then click on the payment button on the vendor’s sales page, follow them all the way through to the ClickBank payment page, scroll to the very bottom, and make sure YOUR affiliate name shows up. It’s one thing to lose money paying for clicks that don’t sell, it’s another to lose money because of a stupid, uneducated newbie error like I made!
Sorry for the long post, Socrates, but I hope it helps someone.
Looking forward to your next post. Brian

  37. Laurieon 19 Mar 2007 at 6:51 pm

    Hi Socrates,

Great post and great bottomline. 200% ROI is fantastic. Don’t kill the goose that laid the golden egg. Socrates just showed you how with a little research and testing PPC is not hard to do.

If a product does not make a sale for you when you spend 80% of what the product pays you as a commission then drop it like a hot potato and move on to the next. There is no golden formula, test, test and test again. Then test some more.

If a product pays you $42 upon a sale commit no more than $34 to test it. Yea, some will say go as high as $68 or $82 but if I get zilch sales at $34 adspend that product is history.

Test 5 CB products that way and the odds are 1 of them will make you money. The other 4 will be dead or slow and not worth your time.

Socrates product was (as a example only, I have no idea of his commish or product) paying him $42 a sale. He spent 35% of $42 ($14.70) to make 1 sale. Those are numbers anyone can live with.

Don’t keep throwing money away at a dead horse. If at 80% of your commission there is no sale drop it. At the most maybe 100% if you want to. What happens is some folks get so carried away they end up spending $150 to make one sale or no sale. Crazy. Beyond crazy.

Cut your losses fast and let the winners ride. Do enough testing and you will soon have 10 moneymaking campaigns on auto-pilot. It’s a numbers game.

Thanks again Socrates for the post. It’s a breath of fresh air in a room full of well…you know what.

Test, test, test! Nothing will take it’s place.

    Cheers,

    L

  39. Socrates Socratouson 19 Mar 2007 at 8:18 pm

    Hi Again,

Brian, I DO remember you. Great to see you here.
I believe that if you dont know what you are about
to say, then dont way it. In other words, dont
give the wrong advice passing it as a “fact”.
Those people on the warrior forum gave you advice
based on their opinion NOT a fact. That is why I
replied to you. I visit the forum quite often but
    I rarely post.
Anyway, it is nice to see you aboard. Stick around.
    you will learn something.

Having said that, let me also state that a major
reason “marketers” fail is because they do business
    based on their opinion.

Let me say something clearly. In business, your
opinion doesnt matter. the only opinion that
matters is that of your customers’.

    example:
You think your Adwords ad is good and
should make you money. You run it but noone clicks
    on it.
    YOU were wrong.

then, you thought your offer was irresistible.
you got 500 people to your website. Noone bought.
    YOU were wrong.

The ONLY way to know what works and what doesnt
is to test, and know your metrics.

When you send 500 to your site and noone bought
    did you know why?

Do you know the number of people you SHOULD have
sent to the site before realizing something was
wrong? (allowing 500 people to your site without
making a sale, doesnt sound good to me)
Maybe after 100 people went by, you should have
    changed something

    etc…

    Stick around and keep posting.

    There is more coming…

    Well Done!

Another great internet marketing success story using the simple tools available online. I’ve been selling an online course since January 2005 using only Google AdWords with great success.

If you have a good product, with a good message to the right market and offer outstanding support you’ll profits will far outweigh the market expense.

Thanks for sharing your test with us. I still cant help being sceptical though, as it seems like you never get all the pieces of the pie. as a newbie i’m getting sick of having to buy that ‘extra’ bit of information that is ‘vital’ to success.

Hope for the little guy! Many people (myself included) think that the big bucks can only be had by the most experienced people. Those are the ones that write the ebooks that we buy for $97 and then soak up, try a few things in it, don’t make money, then later, rinse, repeat with another guru.

If it really can be done by Mr. Average Joe, then I want to learn how.

Nice numbers. I have been playing the Adword game for quite some time. Not very profitable at this point.

You give us average cost numbers, but you don’t say what your cost to profit ratio was for each week. If your cost was 35% for the last week you made money, but did you make a profit each week?

You also mentioned that the process was repeatable, but is it sustainable, or did you happen to hit on one of the curretnt fads and rode it only to have it tank within a few months?

I don’t have enough information to make an informed decision. I’ll be looking foreward to the future.

    Thanks - Jim Davis

Hi, I’m another newbie just looking into the idea of doing adsense or affiliate programs. Most of what’s online about these seem to be either misleading or confusing. Have bought a few programs in the past few months but they are never what was promised and none were suitable for newbies. Are you coming out with one of your own soon? If so, it would be appreciated if you could create one that’s real and geared for those of us who have no experience and also, minimal technical expertise. Thanks!

  50. Gamyon 20 Mar 2007 at 8:01 am

    Hi Sorates,

Thank you for your honest sharing. This is a good piece of information especially for people like me who is afraid to try PPC because of the many failed stories from using PPC and sometimes it just bring fear and confusion to people who is not familiar with PPC.

Well, I am encouraged by your sharing.
Hey, I got an idea suddenly, while writing this reply.
Why don’t you select a few people who has never touch PPC before, teach them personally, and if these few people can make their break after being mentored by you, I think this will be another success story to be put in an ebook maybe :) and let people start the viral marketing for you
(of course one of these few people with me included :D

Hi, Your article is really interesting. I have search long and hard for an online business that works but have been unsuccessful for the last couple of years, now that I have a new born I really want to find something that works to do online. The info you gave made me feel hopeful…but I still wonder, will it work for me.

    What is the secret?

  55. Jenni Hansenon 20 Mar 2007 at 3:59 pm

Wow! I don’t mcuh, as the person you emailed is my mom, (guru granny) and she’s in the hospital.

She has talked to me about ppc and other traffic tactics, as she had begun training me on some aspects of her business. I also know that she hasn’t done much with Adwords, as she’s too afraid of losing her proverbial shirt.

On her behalf, “I’m impressed”, and I hope she wins something so that when she comes home from the hospital, she’ll have exciting news awaiting her. I know she would find this information invaluable, as she’s always looking for the right way to do things.

    Hi Socrates,

I for one would be interested in your system for using adwords, as I’ve had mixed results using them in the past. I’ve purchased a few decent manuals on the subject the last one being “Affiliate - Project X” but it strikes me that once products like these are launched everyone starts chasing the same areas so we all get watered down results and blame ADwords for the crap results. Research is probably the key that most of us are weak on as it takes up the most time, but would give the biggest payback if we did it right especially with ADwords.

Look forward to more on the subject.

    Hello Socrates,

Thanks for the information posted, that is great stuff, but the thing will be, how much money do you need to start with, I have heard the term, it takes money to make money, but when you are in a low budget, how does one start something like that, I imagine that it will take a long time, so that when you find a product to sell, and you start small, you can use the money you earn to buy more PPC, but how long does it take than for that matter….. by the way, I love to make that much too, and for what I can see, I am encourage to do something like that, I am starting out, and this is a very good article…

    Thanks again
