Internet Marketing is NOT Dead!

Posted by: Socrates Socratous on: Nov 21st, 2006

By now you probably heard the buzz about the
death of internet marketing.

Everybody is getting scared that their online
business is going to die a painful death.

Let me tell you something…

Internet marketing is alive and well!

However…

Your business may indeed be dying a slow death
like most businesses that are not based on
a strong foundation and a clear vision.

I am sick and tired of all these internet
marketing “gurus” (Yes Mike I totally agree about the quotes here 🙂 )
that are spawing everywhere around the net
day after day, “teaching” people how to become
successful online.

Truth is, most of these “gurus” dont even
make any money for themselves, how could they
be selling information and teaching others
how to do what they dont know how to do?

Here is how it usually goes:
You read an ebook, or take a course or attend
a seminar and they teach you…

“Pick something that you really love, a passion,
find a problem in that field (niche) and provide
information how to solve the problem”

Since you are just getting into internet marketing
you love it, it’s your newfound passion, you
see how the teacher is so successful, so
you go home and what do you do?

That’s right! you find a problem in your new
“passion”, internet marketing that is, and you
Solve it 🙂

SEO, List building, adwords, adsense, you name it

So you go on and make your new passion to
be your business. You dont realize that those
are the tools you can use to conquer Any *Other*
market.

You are not supposed to use those tools on
the same market that provides them to you. They
become ineffective very quickly.

Its like you want to go into war, so you go
and train with the marines. Then you decide to
go back and fight against the marines with
the same strategies they tought you. Do you see
how everything you learn becomes ineffective
to both sides? They know your every move and
why you do it!

Of course the marines havent told you everything
so they win the battle and you lose!

Now imagine if you actually went on to
fight a country with no military training instead.

You see the difference?

Don’t confuse your tools with your market.
Use the tools and strategies given to you to
markets that dont want to be doing what you
are doing.

A market that I am particularly involved with
is the music market. Now people interested in
music are not interested in marketing music related
products are they? They are interested in listening
and learning about music and they will pay
for that. No competition with everyone.

When you go to the music store to buy a CD
you pay top dollar for it because you want that
CD. You are not really interested in opening a
music store. However, the music store, uses
marketing tools to market their CDs.

see what I mean?

This whole problem would have been prevented
if you were told:

“Pick something that you really love, a passion,
[Other Than Internet Marketing]
find a problem in that field (niche) and provide
information how to solve the problem”

I hope this comes as an eyeopening message to
you and you go on to build a very successful
internet business. See you at the top!

Next time I will tell you how to find underdeveloped
niches and ways you can utilize them…

Till next time

    Socrates,

Hey man… I totally agree with you :). I think it’s ridiculous to say that internet marketing is dying. As long as the internet is around, people will find ways to market online. What “may” be dying are some of the techniques in the internet marketing niche that used to work very well. They are dying because they have been abused. Personally I believe the blame lies with everyone involved, not just the “gurus” ;). It is the masses that give these guys the power that they have.

I think it’s time to start opening up the eyes of the masses. There is a new era of marketing on the horizon and it’s going to be shaped by the way everyone responds to the issues at hand right now. I don’t have all the answers, but I’m really glad to see people like you speaking up about it. Thanks for being one of the good guys and providing the honest truth!

    Hi Socrates,

I hear what you’re saying…but in my own experience it is harder to make $$ in niche markets than catering to the “internet marketing” crowd.

I’ve tried using these same techniques in “weight loss and fitness”, “dating / matchmaking” as well as “music” also, and I have to say that it is tons easier to make money selling “how to make money online” stuff.

Plus, many of the so-called “gurus” only have experience selling to the internet marketing crowd, and this is NOT at all the same crowd as (for example) “weight loss” where the competition is fiercer as you have to fight against multi-million dollar infomercial campaigns.

While I’m quite confident that there are plenty of niches “ripe for the picking”, the “internet marketing” niche seems to offer the most opportunity for profit. The people at the top tend to retire and spend their time playing golf or whatever, which leaves it wide open for new people to rise up.

The people who are now considered “gurus” often are the same people who two or three years ago were “internet marketing newbies”.

I do have a lot of niches that I’m passionate about, but the IM niche in particular has been wildly profitable while the others niches I’ve worked with have been disappointing.

    Socrates,
I could not agree more, and your insight is why I continue to subscribe to your ezine while quitting literally hundreds of others.

It is great wisdom to say (my paraphrase) “Learn from the marketing big guns and apply what you learn in non-Internet marketing areas.”

You have to be persistent and give it time to happen.

I have built my business in Internet marketing by being an “un-guru.” I am ever a student, ever learning with wide-eyed wonder from a select few whom I have come to respect. Without exception they are men and women who practice “Give first to get.”

My desire is to see what really works and help inform others. I want to keep them from frustration, disappointment and enthusiasm killing bad choices. I have “had it” with the types you describe above:

=> self-appointed “guru wannabes” whose only premise is to make money off of those who, out of an honest desire to build their own business (until they find out better) will “bite” on any quick money scheme.

It has been well stated that we succeed by helping others succeed. If we can help others see past the hype; get encouragement, and as you, Eric Holmgren and others (me, too) say: “catch a vision”; and avoid misspent time, effort, and money,

    …then we will have succeeded.

One key is not to go for the proverbial “home run” (baseball lingo), but instead work to build, as Robert Allen so well stated, “multiple streams of income.”

Unfortunately, that weeds out many who would otherwise be successful.

    Why?

It takes time, effort, a plan, and discipline — and VISION (thanks again, Eric). Setting for one’s self a new weekly and/or monthly business building goal makes the process real and highly achievable. Going for many small victories adds up before you realize it.

To all of Socrates readers: don’t get discouraged. It’s absolutely OK to start small. Go for small successes. Build on them. Do it over again.

    You can, you know.

    – Neil

Socrates, you’re right on the money when you said that most “gurus” don’t even
make any money for themselves, how could they
be selling information and teaching others
how to do what they don’t know how to do?

It’s great to see someone actually selling useful products, like eBook Messiah and My Digital Dispatch (both of which I own). By developing and selling useful products, you can honestly speak from personal experience (unlike some people who read a bunch of materials on business or marketing and sell a rehashed version themselves).

I totally agree that internet marketing is not dying, however I have seen that people’s trust in it has been dramatically diminish. Why? One of the reasons are that most of the internet marketings are lying; they say they give gift, benefits to people by just clicking on the icons, but when the icons are clicked on, gradually they must pay.

Secondly, becasue there are too many webpage now, becasue registering the domant is easy and cheap, and many just do it for fund, not money or charity. However, I still believe that peoeple like to use internet for business or shopping or finding information, becasue it is cheap, fast and save energy.

    Socrates,

You bring up some very valid points in your writing. We all learn by receiving helpful advice like this.

Reading one comment above by Tara Johnson, I can see why people cannot learn from the ‘gurus’. I understand that the marketing niche may be profitably initially, because want to learn how to do this successfully and buy whatever they can from people they believe to be credible. But, unless the teacher has been there and done that in other niches, how can you learn from that person, because they are not really successful marketers themselves?

It would be wonderful if you would expand on your wisdom and teach us how to find the elusive profitable niches that we are looking for, then how to take advantage of them, so that more people can actually earn some money by marketing on the internet.

    Keep up the good work.

Socrates, you bring up an interesting point and agree with you.
I have just started learning how to build up my own site and believe me, it’s a long-way learning process that will never end…
I shall keep your article above in mind as it is so true in many ways.

I totally agree that internet marketing is not dying but increseing chance of online works as now a days more than 1 billion computers are online everydays. But I observe that, people’s trust in it has been reduced As soo many domains are there about lots of money earning from home part time but ask to pay first and like a fraud and I everyday recieve more than 3o mails for online earning. Everyone cosider that such site are fraud and now it is difficult to find proper things. Also I find that so many affiliate start there own website and blindly commit lots of thing.

But certainly Internet marketing is not dying, but internet arena should take some proper step against such bogus site and unnecessary email spammed. Thanks for highlighting such issue.
And internet marketing is an art and only learnt by ourselt not with the help of gurus. It is a self developing arts and like daily excercise.

just read all the above and valid points they are, my question is how do you find people you can trust Neil says he has learnt from a select few how do you establish who they are without losing an arm and a leg to all the others?

damn dude!i wish you would put out an ebook on how to build an online business! you break things down to its basic form, straight to the point and easy to understand(o internet marketing lingo)if you ever put out a course on how to set up a opt in page and web site let me know. at least with you i will know what the heck your talking about .:))loved the analogy.

Email marketing is far from dead, despite the fact it can be a challenge to build an opt-in list of email addresses. Even with the popularity and ease of publishing on blogs, an ezine should be a standard in your online marketing toolbox.
